Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medicine and today it benefits millions of people around the world. It forms part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its history dates back thousands of years. It has been developed, tested, researched and refined by generations resulting in a complex, precise and complete form of medicine.
Once viewed as mysterious by people in the west and little understood, Acupuncture is now widely recognised throughout the world as a safe and effective form of medical treatment.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has a completely different understanding of how the human body functions – what leads to good health and what causes illness and disease. For a person to be healthy their internal energy (Qi) needs to be flowing correctly and must be in balance with their other vital physical substances & processes. Whenever there is an imbalance or blockage in any of these vital elements or processes illness will develop.
Qi and other vital substances flow around the body in specific pathways or channels, which connect to all the organs of the body. Acupuncturists are trained to use a range of diagnostic techniques to assess and locate any blockages or imbalances a person may have. Fine needles are then inserted in precise points on the channels. This affects the flow and strength of Qi in order to restore its natural balance. You may feel nothing at all as the needles are inserted, or a very quick “sting”. All needles are sterile and are never re-used. After the needles are inserted, you lie for about 30 minutes while you relax. Most people report a deep sense of calm, and improved sleep after a session.
Modern science has provided several explanations to explain the effects of acupuncture, these include:
At the first consultation, I take a full medical history to discover all the signs which, when taken together, give a complete picture of your state of health. Your pulses on both wrists may be taken, and your tongue examined. This allows me to determine the balance of your health in different parts of your body.
Since each person is unique, the number of treatments required will vary. Sometimes changes can be felt after the first treatment, while others may require more visits and the effects felt less rapidly. Usually weekly or even twice weekly treatment sessions are best at the start. Your treatment plan will be discussed and agreed with you at the first session and kept under review. I offer a range of payment options to assist you.
